Canterbury members with Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts-Schori
The Episcopal Chaplaincy of NYU is both a student run club at New York University (Canterbury Club) and a ministry of the Diocese of New York that hosts events open to young adult undergraduate and graduate students from any part of the city and beyond. In addition our services are open and welcoming to all in the wider community.
Our mission is to nurture an Episcopal community of seekers and believers at NYU and surrounding campuses. We envision a community of hospitality, dialogue, personal engagement, and prayer where students can nurture their spiritual lives and engage questions of the Christian faith with their hearts, and minds.
After worship we gather for a community meal. This meal is cooked either by local church volunteers, some quasi professional friends of the Chaplain as well as the occasional student cooking night. Students who have a hankering for a little kitchen work are welcome to join in any Sunday with whatever crew is cooking. The meal has a special place in the life of our group because a lot of time and care is taken to make this a special weekly oasis for students while they are in school. The work they are doing every day, even the hard growth of learning to cope with a chronic procrastination condition (if you suffer from that as we all do from time to time) deserves a moment where one can sit back and rest, eat and breathe easier.
There are lots of other things we do over the course of the year: we take retreats, we go on trips to see fall foliage, we go up to a partner group at West Point, we have guest speakers some nights and we also will be having occasional movie nights this year.
